History Of Rajasthan

Introduction
Snuggled in the foothills of the Aravallis, Rajasthan – the largest state of India – deserves the attentions of travelers from all around the world with its rich and exotic history. The history of this fascinating state of the country is as marvelous and bewildering as India itself. The fascinating state of Rajasthan has a rich & exotic historical legacy and has been the kingdom of several rulers. Forts, places, havelis, temples, fairs & festivals, etc show the rich history of the state.

Ancient Era: Till 1200 A.D.
The ancient history of Rajasthan goes back to 1200 A.D. Rajasthan was a part of many republics and ruled by Mauryan empire in around 321 – 184 B.C. Rajputs came and occupied it around 700 A.D. The Gurjara Partihars cited the land of Rajputana. The Rajputs remained in power till 12th century. Around 1000 – 1200 A.D. there was a constant struggle for supremacy among Parmars, Chauhans, and Chalukyas.
Medieval Era: 1201 - 1707
Due to internal strife among Rajputs for supremacy weakened the unity of Rajputs. As a result Muslim rulers took over a part of Rajasthan. Ajmer, Nagaur, and Ranthambhore were the prime centers for exercising Muslim powers. The great Mughal ruler – Akbar – consolidated all power in his hands from Rajput rulers. Around 13th century, Mewar emerged as one of the most powerful state in Rajasthan and remained so for quite sometime. Mewar was the prime battlefield and the place has witnessed some of the most horrific battles. The most legendary Rajput warriors who represented the vigor and bravery of the Rajput dynasty and whose tales of gallantry are still embossed in the golden sands of Rajasthan were Rana Uday Singh, his son Rana Pratap, Rana Kumbha, Bhappa Rawal, Prithviraj Chauhan and others.

Modern Era: 1707 – 1947
After 1707, the Mughal power started to weaken. As the result, Marathas came in power. Marathas captured Ajmer in 1775. In the beginning of 19th century Rajasthan was attacked by Pindaris. Later British took over the Rajasthan and continued till 1947.

Post Independence Era
Before independence Rajasthan was broken up into several small princely states for easy administration. The slow process of merging all these provinces into one state began in 1948 and ended in 1956. At present the state has 32 districts that have been officially declared a part of Rajasthan by the Government.
